In my Literacy Techniques classes, I asked the students to bring to our class a strategy they had used in another class and explain how they used it and how it helped. I was very surprised when students brought triple entry journals, exit cards and rafts. I know that many of us are using many different types of strategies but these 3 were the only ones the students could talk about. Why are the students not getting a better grasp of the various strategies? When I teach a strategy in the Literacy class, it's not really to use in this class. I frequently mention using, for example, the coding in science or social studies but I think the students put the strategy away and don't look at it again until the next Lit. class. Any ideas?

Dilemma


I am mentoring a first year teacher in Buckfield. She teaches social studies. During one of our check-ins she asked what I might use to help a student better understand the text. (Yeah, literacy techniques! :-) I gave her double and triple entry journal templates and all of the information about coding. Any other suggestions? My mentee states that the student is involved in class and reads the material. She has trouble remembering it for quizzes and tests
